Mike Rosen grew up in a family dedicated to fabric, design and creating spaces for memories. His parents opened their upholstery shop in 1991 in Winnipeg. Mike was a young teenager when he began stripping furniture (to find quarters)! I, Katrina, came on the scene in 1996 to help sweep the shop floor and strip furniture as well.
I'm not sure anyone expected Mike to become passionate about the world of furniture and upholstery, yet after working as an engineer and as an electrician, he continued to be drawn back to his families business. One of Mike's first defining pieces of his future was a large sofa and love-seat he designed and created for our wedding in 2004.
The defining pieces of Bow Valley Upholstery's future was a large sofa and loveseat Mike designed and built for our wedding in 2004
Us young Rosen's moved to Canmore, Alberta in 2010 and began Bow Valley Upholstery initially out of a maintenance closet! Mike also took the important Upholsterer job at the Fairmont Banff Spings Hotel, honing his skills and growing his interest for materials in antique and modern pieces. Bow Valley Upholstery grew and our space became much larger. As for me, who knew 21 years later, I'd still be sweeping the floors, stripping furniture and taking to reupholstering myself! More on Katrina Here.
We are fortunate to work with an incredible team of designers, dedicated sewers and upholsterers. Mike's sister, Janice, now owns Verve design and workshop in Winnipeg and she and Mike collaborate often.
Hudson Bay Blanket
The inspiration from this piece came from Canada's oldest business, the Hudson Bay Company.
We considered the arms being a high wear area and thought they would be best redone in a sharp leather. These chairs are in a tourist accommodation where they're used and admired and have created quite the statement.
